There are three potable springs in Bad Elster whose waters have different mineral contents and therapeutic effects. Health treatments involving drinking and bathing in spring water focus on the Moritzquelle and the Marienquelle springs which are close to Badeplatz square. The Moritzquelle spring was given its present name in 1851 but it was first referred to in records as the "Elstersäuerling" as far back as 1531 and is therefore the oldest spring in the resort. The therapeutic effects of its water were recognised in 1669. Uses: mineral water and hydromassage baths for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular illnesses, natural mud baths and packs for rheumatism, arthritis, gynaecological problems, for completely healing injuries to joints, ligaments and muscles resulting from sports and accidents. Spring water is taken as a drink to assist in the treatment of metabolic, renal and urinary tract diseases.
