List & menning

The cultural highlights on offer in Bad Füssing include the Amber Museum and St. Leonhard Museum. Another main attraction in the surrounding region is the legendary pilgrimage church in Altötting - an absolute must on any visit to the spa resort.

Amber Museum
For several years, visitors have been able to get a closer insight into the world of amber in Bad Füssing. The fascinating Amber Museum is situated just behind the town hall. One of the most beautiful pieces on show in the museum is the largest amber chess set in the world. Crafted in medieval style using the best amber from the Samland region, it has made an adventurous journey from Gdansk to San Francisco and back to Europe again. Other exhibits include jewellery from the imperial court in Beijing as well as Tibetan and Muslim prayer beads.

St. Leonhard Museum, Aigen
The museum has more than 200 votive and sacrificial offerings in iron, wax, silver and wood, including iron figures of humans and animals dating from the 11th and 12th centuries as well as exhibits on the history of the St. Leonhard pilgrimage. Other exhibition highlights include reproductions of historical maps and local finds.

Chapel of Mercy, Altötting
Despite being small, the Chapel of Mercy is of great historical importance and dominates the large Kapellplatz square. The Octagon, the main part of the church believed to date from the year 700, is probably the oldest building of its type in Germany. The octagonal design of the Chapel of Mercy shows that it was once an important baptistery. According to legend, St. Rupert, the bishop of Salzburg, baptised the first Christian duke of Bavaria here. The early-Gothic picture of the Virgin Mary standing with her child is a pilgrimage site believed to have miraculous powers.
